Founded in 2009, Ryukyu Churayuki is a café near Kokusai Street in Naha, Okinawa. Its signature dessert is Churapin, inspired by Taiwanese xuehua ice and refined in Okinawa, with a fluffy, smooth and uniquely chewy texture.
About Churapin and Other Menu Items
What is Churapin, and how is it different from shaved ice?
Rooted in Taiwan’s “xue hua bing” (snow ice), Churapin is an original dessert uniquely refined by Ryukyu Churayuki. While traditional shaved ice is made by freezing and shaving water, Churapin uses freshly drawn milk alone as its base, with no added water, so it has none of the crunchy ice crystals or brain-freezing chill.
It falls apart like soft powder snow as you scoop it, then reveals a distinctive, slightly chewy texture in your mouth. Described as “a Taiwanese dessert with a whole new texture—neither ice cream nor shaved ice,” it has even earned praise from guests visiting from Taiwan, who say it “tastes better than the versions back home.”
How do you pronounce your shop name and product name? Are they registered trademarks?
Our shop name is pronounced “Ryukyu Churayuki,” and our product name is pronounced “Churapin.”
Both names are registered trademarks with the Japan Patent Office.
Are Xue Hua Bing (雪花冰) and Churapin the same thing?
Churapin is rooted in Taiwan's Xue Hua Bing. Starting from Xue Hua Bing, Ryukyu Churayuki pursued its own light, smooth and fluffy texture with a chewy feel, and evolved it into our original product, Churapin.
Where was Churapin born?
Its roots are in Taiwan, but today's Churapin was created in Okinawa through many years of refinement. That is why we describe it as "Born in Taiwan, raised in Okinawa."
What is Churapin's texture like?
It is light and fluffy and melts smoothly in your mouth, with a distinctive chewy feel inside.
What are the ingredients in Churapin?
We use freshly drawn milk with no added water. Other ingredients include dairy products, sugar, and gelatin.
Which Churapin do you recommend for first-timers?
If you like fruit, we recommend "Passion Fruit" (passion fruit), "Golden Treasure" (apple mango) and "Sweet Romance" (mixed berries). Please see the menu page for the latest menu.
Can I have just the Churapin base?
Yes. We also offer a menu item without toppings, so you can enjoy Churapin's original milk base and texture directly.
Your Churapin toppings have unique names, don’t they?
We’ve deliberately chosen evocative names such as “Gold and Silver Treasures,” “A Hint of Love,” “Sweet Temptation,” and “A Lady in Love” to spark conversation among our guests as they order.
What allergens does Churapin contain?
The basic Churapin contains milk and gelatin. Some toppings may contain other allergens, so please check the menu or ask our staff for details.
Do you serve lunch or brunch?
We offer a bamboo-steamed meal (6–7 kinds of vegetables, pork belly, fish, and 20-grain rice), as well as a braised pork rib bun and soup dumpling set.
Do you serve drinks?
We offer Indonesian coffee, tropical fruit juices, flower tea, blooming tea, and “Drowning in Love Shisa” (our original drink), among others.
What makes your Indonesian coffee special?
Our premium Indonesian coffee beans are grown without pesticides under the agricultural guidance of the Bali provincial government, on the slopes of Mount Batur, known as the “Mountain of the Gods,” on the island of Bali. Only fully ripe coffee cherries are carefully handpicked, one by one. The coffee offers a well-balanced flavor with a rich aroma, full body, and gentle sweetness.
Do you offer any desserts other than Churapin?
We offer douhua (tofu pudding) with mango, blueberry, or brown sugar and roasted soybean flour, as well as Taiwanese sweet red bean soup.
